Hackers warning on VoIP

November 10, 2006 VoIP 4

The hackers are working hard to find a way to listen and use your VOIP.

Stop the hackers now. Voice networking security is not difficult. Most of the tricks and tools that are needed already exist in most software and systems. It doesn’t take additional or special programs.

It does take consistency in doing what should be already getting done. Running antivirus programs and maintains access control are just two of the common ways to protect the security of the VoIP. Most of the issues that are being brought up are not VoIP specific, but are broader issues that can readily be handled with diligence.

There are four main levels to VoIP security: infrastructure, call management, end points, and applications. All of theses areas must be maintained and protected. Once there is a breach, the bad guys will use it to their fullest abilities. It will be too late – like trying to kill a virus before it kills your hard drive.

Does that mean that VoIP should be avoided? No more than computers in general should be avoided. But security should be forefront in all companies minds, especially when the begin talking about VoIP. If security is an afterthought, then it’s usually because of the bad guys getting in. If you maintain a secure system, then you will maintain a secure VoIP as well.
