VoIP handsets offer choice

The choice for a VOIP handset is wide. It can swing from something as simple as a USB device that feels much like a mobile phone but attaches directly to the computer all the way over to the opposite extreme of a complete wireless handset. The choice will be determined by the needs and the price. The more features included in a handset, the more expense will follow.

If mobility is not an issue, then the plug-in variety of VOIP is the cheapest and quickest route. For consumers who prefer flexibility and the freedom to roam from the computer, it has to be wireless. The cordless options have no USB connections to the computer. Most have separate charging bases for the handsets, allowing them to be housed in completely different rooms.

All VOIP will run over a dial up (landline) connection, but for a better voice quality and for video options it is best to upgrade to broadband. Skype tends to choke completely on regular landline connections. Even a simple upgrade to DSL will help with Skype video calls and even increase the voice quality.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) allows consumers to make inexpensive phone calls from the computer to landlines or even mobile phones. The calls utilize software such as Skype or Windows Live Messenger. It will make calls world wide from computer to computer as well as from computer to normal phone lines.
