Skype is a type of VOIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. It is one of the many VOIP providers that have appeared on the market in just the last couple of years. It is one of the services that run on your computer.

There are many benefits to the Skype service. It is the choice of many domestic users, which means there is a large base of other users that you can call for free. Any calls, from Skype VOIP to Skype VOIP don’t cost the caller anything.

Skype VOIP service is also easy to install and configure on computers. It doesn’t take a computer wiz to set it up. Even better, this system will run on either a PC or on Apple’s Mac computers.

It takes more than just a computer and the software to set up VOIP. Skype requires a special phone that plugs into the computer via a USB port. Fortunately these telephones sets are readily available in most high street stores.

One of the downfalls of the Skype VOIP is that the computer must be running in order to use the service. Although this is fine in residential situations, business might be better off using a VOIP service that is stand alone.

There are VOIP services that not only provide this stand alone feature, but they also offer many other advanced features.
