VOIP Could be the Phone of the Future

VOIP is a fun new form of telephone technology. Companies, like Skype and Vonage are piquing the interest of consumers with fun advertisements and great prices. Although many people are signing up for the new services, they aren’t abandoning traditional telephones. They learned their lessons from cell phone experience (many consumers signed up for cell service and dropped traditional service only to find that the cell wasn’t as dependable as needed.).
For all its hype, VOIP has its problems (much like cell phone service with its dropped calls and dead zones) that make it unreliable for consistent service. Much of the VOIP service when it does work well is extremely good. Unfortunately, it is bad as much as it is good.
VOIP is still working out its kinks. Often the calls don’t make the connection they need to and the voices can be distorted or just hard to hear. Other times there are glitches in the service – like when a cell cuts in and out – that make it impossible to follow the conversation.
Even though the industry market share of VOIP is growing and moving quickly into mainstream and experts are predicting that it will be the main form of communication in the future, VOIP technology still has a way to go before it can meet the dependability and quality of the traditional phone line.
