VOIP Struggling to Survive

VOIP is running into problems that are more than just the recent patent cases - this is according to some experts in the industry. Not only have many of the providers been struggling financially (including Vonage, one of the largest providers), but with recent patent losses in court, the situation is only going to get worse.
For a long time, VOIP was touted as the reinvention of the traditional telephone. It was hyped (and expected) to replace land lines for many consumers. So far, it has fallen short of being all that was expected. Instead, most providers are giving users basic telephone over the internet – and not even doing that well. There hasn’t been all the great innovations that were expected when VOIP began hitting the marketplace.
VOIP is just one more industry in a long list of internet industries that have surfaced over the last few years. The question remains will it be able to survive the shark fest that is now taking place, or will it fall to the wayside like the beta recorder?
If VOIP providers want to succeed and want to make a profit in the process then they have to start looking out for the consumer. There needs to be something new and exciting available in order to pull the customers away from the comfort of the traditional land line.
