Check Point introduces Skype security block

Australian internet security company Check Point Software Technologies is leading the way in ensuring that management and blocking capabilities extend to the most recent versions of consumer software applications.

Check Point has revealed that its enterprise security gateways can now block the latest version of consumer VoIP application, Skype v3.5. This is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to help enterprises manage risks associated with consumer software packages downloaded by employees for personal use.

The ability to manage and block Skype v3.5 is particularly critical because a new virus called w32/Ramex.A is spreading through Skype for Windows. Users infected with this virus can pass it by sending a chat message to other Skype users asking them to click on a web link that infects the recipient's computer.

By using Check Point's SmartDefense, an IT administrator can immediately secure the corporate network against the virus by simply blocking Skype use until the virus storm has passed, or by limiting use to versions not affected.

Applications such as instant messaging, peer-to-peer file sharing and Skype are often installed on computers without a company's knowledge. Once installed on even a single networked PC, the application can become an open avenue for hackers seeking to infiltrate the system. Commercial enterprises must have control over anything with the potential to introduce new threats into the network.

Aside from obvious security issues, there is also the potential for proprietary information being sent off network without approval. This raises legal and competitive risks for companies, while the added bandwidth consumed by the products can increase IT costs and affect network performance.
