There were almost 80 million VoIP subscribers worldwide in 2007. According to figures produced by Infonetics Research, an international market research firm, during 2007 sales of equipment for VoIP and IMS service providers rose by 19% over sales in 2006.

A principal analyst for VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research said: “The overall next generation voice equipment market is maturing, as evidenced by single-digit annual sales growth in traditional equipment such as media gateways and softswitches.

“Other types of equipment, namely session border controllers, media servers, and voice application servers, will generally grow faster for the next five years.”

Nortel and Nokia Siemens were the top revenue leaders worldwide in the combined media gateway and softswitch markets. These two markets were the most buoyant segments during the year.
